What is a Diagnostic Hearing Test?
A diagnostic hearing test is a thorough clinical assessment of how well your ears and auditory system are functioning. It goes beyond a basic screening and provides detailed information about the type, degree, and configuration of any hearing loss present. The results are used to determine whether further management is needed and, if so, what form that should take.
What Does the Assessment Involve?
The assessment typically includes a combination of the following:
- A visual inspection of the ear canal and eardrum (otoscopy)
- Pure tone audiometry: testing your ability to hear tones across a range of frequencies
- Speech audiometry: assessing how clearly you hear and understand spoken words
- Tympanometry: measuring middle ear function and eardrum mobility

How Do I Prepare for the Assessment?
No special preparation is required. If you wear a hearing aid, bring it with you. If you have had previous hearing tests, it is helpful to bring any prior reports, though this is not essential. Gabrielle will ask about your hearing history and any concerns you have at the start of the appointment.
Does Medical Aid cover the Test?

What Happens After the Test?
Once the assessment is complete, Gabrielle will discuss the findings with you. If the results indicate hearing loss or another condition requiring attention, she will explain the available options — which may include hearing aids, referral to an ENT specialist, or a tinnitus management plan. You will not leave the appointment without a clear understanding of your results.
